HOW DID MOTHER’S DAY ORIGINATE?

Source:  http://bit.ly/3rd4PGY

Mother’s Day has a surprisingly modern and very personal origin—especially in the United States.

The Origin of Mother’s Day:

It Started with One Woman.  The holiday was largely created by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s. She wanted to honor her mother, who had been a community activist caring for others.  After her mother passed away in 1905, Anna set out to create a day dedicated to recognizing all mothers and their sacrifices.

The First Celebration (1908):

The first official Mother’s Day celebration took place in 1908 at a church in West Virginia.

Anna Jarvis organized it as a day of reflection, gratitude, and appreciation—not gifts or commercial activity.

Becomes a National Holiday (1914):

Thanks to her efforts, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national holiday in 1914, to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
